This is hands-down one of my favourite products we own. I’m not sure if it’s how well it works, the simple design, how economical it is or because it makes me feel “safe” knowing that, in an emergency, we would have access to clean water? Perhaps it’s all of the above.

“Moreover, Berkey Water Filter systems are capable of purifying both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. So powerful, this Berkey Filter system is able to remove red food colouring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Perfect for everyday use and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure or treated water may not be available.”
While living abroad in countries where the tap water was not recommended for drinking, we safely consumed the tap water using our Berkey and we saved thousands of plastic bottles from landfill. We also filter water at home in Canada because “safe” drinking water is still chemically treated to sterilize the water etc. and we don’t want to consume chlorine and other harmful chemicals if we can avoid it.
The black filters last a long time - 3000 gallons per filter. The unit uses two filters minimum so, according to the manufacturer, that means you can filter up to approximately 6000 gallons before needing to replace them. Depending on your water consumption, that means the Berkey filters last for years and years!
